The output interface enables system integrators to control external devices. It includes:
Sixteen Form-C relay outputs for load switching.
Two digital inputs for cabinet tamper and power fault status monitoring.
Note: The output interface requires 12 to 24 V DC for power.
Output Interface Components
Supplying Power to the Output Interface
The output interface requires 12 to 24 V DC for power on TB11 (VIN and GND).
Locate power source as close to the output interface as possible.
Use a minimum of 18 AWG wires.
The VOUT terminal on TB11 provides the same voltage as VIN.
Important: Observe POLARITY on TB11.
Communication Wiring
The output interface communicates with a controller via a 2-wire RS-485 interface. The interface allows multi-drop communication on a single bus of up to 4,000 feet (1,200 m).
Use twisted pair (minimum 24 AWG) with shield for the communication line. See 3.1 MR16OUT-S4 output module specifications.
Important: Install RS-485 termination jumper (J1) only at each end of the communication line.
Inputs for Cabinet Tamper/Power Fault
Input TMP and input FLT are used for monitoring cabinet tamper and power failure with normally closed contacts. These two inputs are for contact closure monitoring only, and do not use EOL resistors.
Important: If these inputs are not used, install a short piece of wire at the input to indicate a safe condition.
Control Output Wiring
The output interface provides sixteen Form-C relay contacts for controlling door strikes or other connected devices. When switching loads, especially inductive loads such as strikes, abnormal contact wear and premature contact failure can occur. Inductive loads can also generate electromagnetic interference (EMI), which may affect the operation of nearby equipment.
To improve reliability and extend relay life, always install a contact protection circuit. The following two circuits are recommended. The circuit should be placed as close to the load as possible (within 12 inches [30 cm]). Installing it farther from the load reduces its effectiveness. Use wire gauges that are appropriately sized for the load current to prevent voltage drop.
Diode selection
Diode current rating > 1x strike current
Diode break down voltage: > 4x strike voltage
For 12 V DC or 24 V DC strike, diode 1N4002 (100V/1A) typical
DIP Switch and Jumper Usage
Switches 1 to 5 select the device address. Switches 6 and 7 select the communication baud rate. All other configuration settings are set via host software.

Jumpers
Jumper J1 - RS-485 termination, install in first and last units only.
Note: All other jumpers are for factory use only.
Factory Reset
While not normally required, it is possible to perform a factory reset of the input door interface, which deletes all onboard stored data. To perform the delete:
Set all DIP switches to OFF.
Remove power from the output interface.
Restore power to the output interface.
Within 3 seconds, toggle DIP switch 8 ON.
Note: LED behavior varies by SIO model.
Status LEDs
Power-up
All LEDs are OFF.
Initialization
Once power is applied, initialization of the module begins.
When initialization is completed, LEDs A, B, TMP, and FLT are briefly sequenced ON then OFF.
Run Time
After a successful initialization, the LEDs have the following meanings:
LED | Description |
|---|---|
A | Off-line: 1 sec rate, 20% ON |
On-line: Non-encrypted communication: 1 sec rate, 80% ON Encrypted communication: .1 sec ON, .1 sec OFF, .1 sec ON, .1 sec OFF, .1 sec ON, .1 sec OFF, .1 sec ON, .3 sec OFF | |
A | Error indication: Waiting for application firmware to be downloaded: .1 sec ON, .1 sec OFF |
B | SIO communication port status: Indicates communication activity on the SIO communication port. |
TMP | Cabinet tamper |
FLT | Power fault |
1 through 16 | Illuminates when output relays RLY1 through RLY16 are energized. |
