Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) are used in conjunction with keypad readers.

For increased security:

  • PINs provide the two-factor security mode for sensitive areas.
  • PINs are not viewable unless a request is made to show the PIN or during manual PIN entry.

When a PIN is issued to a person, it can be generated randomly by the system or added manually. In both cases, the number of digits allowed for entering the PIN conforms to what is configured on the System Options page. By default, PIN length is 6 digits.

To change the PIN length, select an alternative length from the Number of Digits, and then select Continue. All controllers will be synchronized for the change to take effect.

When the PIN length setting is changed, existing PINs and duress behavior will be impacted. Inform your PIN holders of this change.

After a PIN is created its value is not changed by the system when the system PIN length is changed. For example, if the system PIN is changed from 6 digits to 4 digits, and then to 9 digits, all PINs entered when the PIN length was configured for 6 digits will remain 6 digits. When the system PIN is changed from 6 digits to 4 digits, while the PIN will remain as 6 digits, only the first four need to be entered at the reader. However, if the setting is changed back to 6 digits, the original full 6-digit PIN will once again need to be used. When the system PIN is changed from 6 digits to 9 digits, the full 6 digit PIN needs to be entered.

When PIN holders enter their PIN at the reader:

  • If the system PIN length is decreased (for example, from 6 to 4 digits): The first 4 digits will be used.
  • If the system PIN length is increased (for example, from 6 to 9 digits): The PIN holder can continue to use their existing 6-digit PIN.

Note: When using LNL-series hardware, the "#" key must be entered after the PIN if the system PIN length is longer than the person's PIN.

LenelS2 node readers support a maximum PIN length of 6 digits. However, if PIN length is set to 9 digits, and you issue a person a PIN that is 9 digits, that PIN will not work, and the person will not have access.

Duress PINs

Keypad readers can be configured to allow access when a duress PIN is entered.

This functionality is configured when readers are added or modified.

When duress PINs are entered, the system reports events as duress rather than normal with a Critical severity level.

If the PIN is 123456, then the duress PIN is 123457.

When the system PIN length is shortened to 4 digits, the PIN is now 1234, and the duress PIN is now 1235.
